Trash can with food

Spain has approved the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Act, which introduces measures to reduce food waste and promote its utilization.

Spain has approved the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Law, aimed at reducing food waste and promoting its reuse. This legislation encourages food donation and the transformation of surplus products into other goods, such as animal feed, contributing to a circular and sustainable economy.

Among other provisions, the law mandates that food products that can no longer be sold but are still suitable for human consumption should be prioritized for donation or redistribution. If they are not fit for human consumption, they should be repurposed for animal feed, feed production, use as by-products in other industries, or ultimately for composting or biofuel production.

Repurposing food that is unsuitable for human consumption into animal feed is an effective strategy to reduce food waste and mitigate its environmental impact. Various studies indicate that bioprocessing these waste materials can turn them into protein-rich feed, offering a sustainable solution for waste management while enhancing food security.
