Thumbs up

The German Nutrient Database (Bundeslebensmittelschlüssel, BLS) has undergone a comprehensive revision and, as of 16 December 2025, is available for the first time free of charge in version 4.0. Developed and maintained by the Max Rubner Institute (MRI), the BLS is Germany’s central nutrient database.

The new version comprises approximately 7,140 foods adapted to current consumption patterns and covers 138 nutrients – ranging from macro- and micronutrients to vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, fatty acids and amino acids. ewly included are, among others, plant-based drinks, pseudocereals such as quinoa and buckwheat, as well as a wide variety of composite dishes.

The BLS is based, among other sources, on laboratory data from the MRI and on analytical results provided by national cooperation partners from public authorities, science and the food industry. This once again underlines the importance of robust analytical data as a foundation for trust, consumer protection and evidence-based decision-making.

For us as a laboratory group, the BLS is also an important reference tool for the professional interpretation of analytical results. Of particular relevance are the expanded data basis, improved quality assurance and the high level of transparency achieved through clearly identified sources, calculations and data gaps. From our perspective, free access strengthens transparency, comparability and trust along the entire food chain – from analytical testing to consumer information.
