Yellow mealworms: approval as a novel food expected this year

 

EFSA has confirmed the safety of the yellow mealworm in a Scientific Opinion. This is the basis for the authorisation of the yellow mealworm as novel food according to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The authorisation is expected this year. The yellow mealworm would be the first approved edible insect. More applications have already been submitted for other edible insects, such as crickets, grasshoppers and the dwarf mealworm.
