We usually only report on regulations that have already been adopted when it comes to the non-renewal of approvals for pesticide active substances. Today we are making an exception because the project to ban chlorpyrifos is currently being pushed ahead at a rush.
The EU Commission has submitted a draft regulation on the non-renewal of the approval for chlorpyrifos as a active substance (PPP) to the WTO on October 3, 2019, which is being discussed with priority and is expected to be published by January 31, 2020. This would have an impact on the reduction of the permissible maximum residue levels, which would then already take effect by June 2020 or August 2020, taking into account the deadlines. We will inform you as soon as we receive further details.
Chlorpyrifos is a broad-spectrum insecticide against biting and sucking pest in agriculture and has been approved in the EU since 2005. The authorisation will expire on 30.1.2020. In Germany and seven other member states, preparations containing chlorpyrifos must not be sold since 2009. However, the insecticide is mainly used in tropical fruits that are imported into the EU. Therefore, after a ban on such products in the middle of next year, it could lead to import problems.
