berries

Berries can be carriers of pathogens, as the results of food monitoring in recent years have repeatedly shown.

Strawberries in particular can be contaminated to varying degrees with microorganisms due to their contact with the ground. In addition to germs that are harmless to humans, zoonotic agents can also reach the strawberries. These can also cause gastrointestinal infections in humans when consuming unwashed fruit.

Frozen soft fruits are imported in large quantities and are used in particular for the production of products such as fruit yoghurt, jam, ice cream or bakery products. Frozen berries contaminated with hepatitis A viruses or noroviruses have repeatedly been the cause of food-borne outbreaks.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) pointed this out in a press release in July.

The AGROLAB food laboratories carry out microbiological quality tests on freshly harvested fruit and vegetables and in processed products (e.g. frozen goods). The examination spectrum is based on the current recommendations of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM).

As one of the few laboratories in Germany, we have the official approval for the detection of pathogenic viruses. The examination for Norovirus and Hepatitis A pathogens can be offered by our microbiological high security lab in Bavaria offered through the regional AGROLAB subsidiaries all over Europe fast and reliable.
