EU-compliant feed testing to ensure food safety

With Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1229, the European Commission has introduced new legal requirements for the feed industry. The regulation complements Regulation (EU) 2019/4 and establishes mandatory maximum levels for unintended contamination with antimicrobial substances in feed not intended for pharmacological use.

The aim is to strengthen food safety, protect animal and human health, and reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

What does the new EU regulation mean for feed manufacturers and suppliers?

The regulation has been in effect since 20 May 2025.

Feed producers, suppliers and quality managers must ensure that:

  • residue limits are strictly observed
  • analytical documentation meets regulatory requirements
  • accredited laboratories (ISO 17025) are used for compliance testing
