Ever bought a fruit bowl of bite-sized, sliced fresh fruit as travel provisions at the station? If you've been missing the indication of origin, there's good news for you.
Fresh fruit and vegetables, whether loose or packaged, must now carry information about the geographical origin of the goods, in addition to other mandatory information. For packaged, unprocessed fruit and vegetables, this information must be on the label; for loose goods, it must be on the box or on an easily recognisable sign.
If fresh fruit is offered raw in bite-sized pieces as a fruit snack or sliced vegetables, e.g. grated carrots, or even ready-to-cook salad mixes, no indication of origin was previously required. This has changed as of 1 January 2025. These fruit and vegetable preparations must now also indicate the origin, as must packaged nuts and nut kernels. However, suppliers have a choice for mixtures, e.g. ‘student’s food’: they can indicate the country of origin for each type of fruit or nut or indicate the origin with ‘EU’, ‘non-EU’ or ‘EU and non-EU’. However, such a general statement is of little help to the customer.
