Only vegans and vegetarians need read no further. I recommend it to everyone else.

When I stroll through our weekly market in Bad Nauheim, I always pass the sales trolley of a regional butcher. And every time I do, I'm greeted by a crispy roll with minced pork meat and lots of onions on it. Now the BVL (German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety) must be trying to spoil my appetite!

In 2023, 318 samples of ‘seasoned minced pork’ for raw consumption were tested as part of the official zoonosis monitoring programme. Inspectors found Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in 11 samples and Salmonella was detected in another sample. STEC bacteria can cause acute, sometimes severe intestinal inflammation. Children are particularly at risk.

Friends of fresh raw-minced meat rolls take note and only buy if you can trust the butcher, have a strong immune system and are sure that the minced meat has been freshly produced. Enjoy your minced meat roll immediately on the spot and don't give your children a bite, even if they whinge!

By the way: Based on a representative sample, the risk of STEC contamination is still around 3.5% (unfortunately relatively high). No risk – no delight!

CALL: Dear master butchers, take the risk seriously! Only a regular, neutral inspection of production hygiene and the microbiological quality of your products by an accredited laboratory - such as one of the AGROLAB GROUP - will protect you and your customers from unpleasant surprises
