The 2nd quarterly evaluation of the BVL on the official controls on pesticide residues in food for the period June - August 2021 in Europe is available.

A total of 4,718 samples were analysed, of which 47.5% of the results were accounted for by samples from the German inspection bodies.

Strawberries formed the focus of the controls with 213 samples, followed by asparagus, peppers, potatoes, lettuce, cultivated mushrooms and carrots (100 -200 samples each).

Encouragingly, only a few residues above the applicable maximum levels were detected.

Only 14 samples (0.6%), 8 of which were fruit and vegetable samples, were rejected: kohlrabi leaves (2 samples), cauliflower, potatoes, leek, radish leaves, spinach, asparagus, (1 sample each). In the other Member States, which analysed 29% of the samples, the exceedance rate was 1.1%, half of which were fruit and vegetable samples.

As usual, the rate of non-compliance and also the proportion of samples with limit values exceeded (10.4%) was significantly higher for samples from outside Europe. Of 82 complaints, 25 concerned fruit and vegetables: peppers (6 samples), basil / edible flowers (3 samples), peas with pods, melons, okra, oranges (2 samples each), aubergines, dill, separate figs, grapefruits / pomelo, raspberries, cherries, limes, mangoes (1 sample each).
